From the Bronx to the Battery: The Subway Sun

The Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) launched New York City’s first underground subway in 1904, connecting the Bronx to Lower Manhattan and later Brooklyn. By making travel affordable and convenient, it encouraged New Yorkers to explore beyond their neighborhoods. To promote ridership, the IRT created poster campaigns like The Elevated Express and The Subway Sun, with the latter proving especially successful.
